I decided to buy a Gaming Laptop. Meet my HP Pavilion 16-a0032dx

As my Linux desktop is starting to show its age these days I decided it was time to buy new computer so that I could play both things at a higher FPS rate and things that didn’t run well under Wine-staging.

I wanted to get a laptop this time so that I had the option of bringing my computer with me if I had the need to do so, so after some searching I ended up picking the HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 16-a0032dx.

It’s a nice sleek black laptop with green accents on the around the keys and logo which should fit my needs perfectly for the next few years.

Swapping to a Google Pixel phone

My previous phone, a Motorola Moto G5, started having camera issues and was already losing official software updates, so it was time to upgrade to a newer phone.

A Google Pixel was the first phone that popped in my head and with good reason. They are the official Android phone and as such get both system and security updates much faster than a non-Google phone would.

With that I mind I went out today and bought one along with the official cloth case. The case does not seem to adequately protect the entire phone though, so I plan on purchasing either a OtterBox Symmetry Series or Defender case for it when possible.

Picked up my first Chromebook

I needed a cheap laptop to do some basic tasks and decided that a Chromebook would fit my current need perfectly. I had used Netbooks in the past, but this would be my first Chromebook.

As luck would have it there was a relatively decent selection of them at my local retailer and I selected the single AMD-powered device that they had available.

It’s a 14” HP Chromebook 14-db0023dx which has the ability to run Debian on it and supposedly also has a long support life which are both massive pluses for me.

The specs for it are about what you’d expect out of a device of this calibre:

  • AMD A4-Series (A4-9120C 1.6 GHz APU)
  • 4GB Memory
  • AMD Radeon R4
  • 32GB eMMC Flash Memory

Setup was easy and it is pretty responsive even with the specs listed above. Overall, I am pretty pleased with the Chromebook and plan on using it for many years to come on various projects.
